Indian Coast Guard Concludes Maiden Contract for 10 Multicopter Drones.

  • The Indian Coast Guard has signed the first contract for ten multicopter drones to boost maritime surveillance and interdiction capabilities.
  • This is in line with the government’s policy for drone technology.
  • Defense Ministry has said that these drones can be operated at sea and from ships moored on the coast. These drones are being used for relief and rescue day and night.
  • The Coast Guard plans to have one hundred drones by the year 2025.

Koneru Humpy wins Silver medal at FIDA World Blitz Chess Championship

Koneru Humpy has won India’s first-ever Silver medal in the FIDE World Blitz Chess Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 30 December 2022. 

Humpy defeated China’s Zhongyi Tan to win Silver in the 17th and final round.

Humpy scored an impressive 12.5 points, just half a point behind the gold medal winner Bibisara Balabayeva of Kazakhastan.

Humpy is the second Indian to win a medal at World Blitz, after Viswanathan Anand.

Govt revised interest rates on small savings schemes

Finance Ministry notify on 30 December 2022 that Government has been revised interest rates on various small savings schemes for the fourth quarter of the current Financial Year starting from 1st January 2023. 

  • The interest rate of five year National Saving Certificate has been increased to 7 per cent from 6.8 per cent. 
  • The interest rate on senior citizen saving scheme increased to 8 per cent from 7.6 per cent. The Monthly Income Account Saving has also been increased to 7.1 per cent from 6.7 per cent. 
  • The interest rate on Kisan Vikas Patra will now be 7.2 percent and will mature in 120 months. The interest rate of small savings deposit of one year time period has been increased to 6.6 per cent from 5.5 per cent. 
  • However, the interest rate on the Public Provident Fund scheme, Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme, and Saving Deposit have been kept unchanged.

India and Cyprus signed an agreement on defense and military cooperation.

  • India and Cyprus have signed several agreements in various fields including defense and military cooperation between the two countries.
  • A Letter of Intent on Migration and Mobility Partnership was also signed to provide a common framework of arrangements and cooperation to facilitate the mobility of students, academics, business people and professionals. It will also help in tackling irregular migration.
  • In the Joint Press Statement following the talks and exchange of agreements, Dr Jaishankar said the meeting demonstrates the commitment towards deepening bilateral cooperation between India and Cyprus. He said the India-Cyprus partnership is rooted in shared values of democracy, diversity and pluralism. He added that the strategic aspects of the relationship have gained new meaning in recent years.

Amit Shah Launched “Prahari app” of the Border Security Force in New Delhi.

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched ‘Prahari’ mobile app and manual of Border Security Force (BSF) in New Delhi.
  • The Prahari app will enable jawans to access personal information and accommodation, Ayushman-CAPF related information and more on their mobile.
  • The App will also provide access to GPF, Bio Data, or grievance redressal on the ‘Centralized Public Grievances Redress and Monitoring System’ or Information on various welfare schemes. The app also connects the Jawans with the portal of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • Amit Shah has urged the BSF to go through the Vibrant Village Programme, make efforts towards increasing tourism in the village, making the village self-sufficient with complete facilities.

World population is projected to reach 7.9 billion in 2023, with 73.7 million people added since New Year’s Day 2022.

  • The US Census Bureau said on December 29 that the world population is projected to reach 7.9 billion on New Year’s Day 2023, with 73.7 million people added since New Year’s Day 2022.
  • This represents an increase of 0.9% in the world population as compared to the previous year.
  • By the year 2025, the bureau’s international database predicts India’s population to surpass that of China, which is currently the most populous country in the world.
  • Formed in 1960, the Census Bureau’s international database produces estimates for more than 227 countries and territories with populations of 5,000 or more.

Benjamin Netanyahu sworn-in as Israel’s prime minister for a sixth time

Benjamin Netanyahu was on 29 December 2022 sworn-in as Israel’s prime minister for a sixth time.

Netanyahu, 73, already Israel’s longest-serving Prime Minister, has the support of 63 lawmakers in the 120-member Knesset (Israeli parliament). In the house, 54 lawmakers voted against his government.

Israel, a Middle Eastern country on the Mediterranean Sea, is regarded by Jews, Christians and Muslims as the biblical Holy Land. Its most sacred sites are in Jerusalem. 

BrahMos missile test fired against a Ship Target from Sukhoi fighter aircraft.

Indian Air Force today successfully fired the Extended Range Version of Brahmos Air Launched missile against a Ship Target from a SU-30MKI aircraft on 29 December 2022.

The supersonic cruise ‘BrahMos’ missile “achieved the desired mission objectives in the Bay of Bengal region. With this successful test, the Indian Air Force achieved a capability boost to carry out precision strikes from Su-30 fighter aircraft against land/ sea targets over long ranges

The successful test firing was a joint effort by the Air Force (IAF) , Indian Navy, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and the BrahMos Aerospace (BAPL).

Brazilian football legend Pele, dies at the age of 82

Brazilian football legend Pele, who won a three World Cups has passed away on 29 December 2022 at the age of 82 in Sau Paulo, Brazil.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, popularly known as Pele had been battling cancer.

Widely regarded as one of soccer’s greatest players, Pele is credited with scoring a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 92 matches for his country.

Pele is the only player to win the World Cup three times, lifting the trophy in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

Pele was named FIFA’s Player of the Century in 2000.
