New Delhi, 16 February 2022
The government approved the “New India Literacy Program (New India Literacy Programme)” for the period FY 2022-2027 to cover all aspects of adult education in line with the National Education Policy 2020 and budget announcements of 2021-22. The National Education Policy 2020 includes recommendations for adult education & lifelong learning.
Adult education in the country has now been renamed as ‘Education for all’: As a progressive step, it has also been decided to replace “adult education” with the term “education for all”. Will be done. The Ministry takes note of the fact that the term “adult education” is not properly covering all non-literates in the age group of 15 years & above.
According to the 2011 census, total number of non-evidences in the age group of 15 years & above in the country is 25.76 crore (Male 9.08 crore, Female 16.68 crore). Considering the progress of 7.64 crore persons certified as literate under Saakshar Bharat program during 2009-10 to 2017-18, it is estimated that at present about 18.12 crore adults in India are still non-literate.
