Asia’s largest 4-metre telescope inaugurated in Uttarakhand.

  • Asia’s largest 4-metre International Liquid Mirror Telescope was launched on 21 March at Deosthal in Uttarakhand.
  • It will serve to give scientists more information about the deep sky and things from asteroids to supernovae.
  • The International Liquid Mirror Telescope has a 4-metre-diameter rotating mirror made of a thin layer of liquid mercury to collect and focus light.
  • The metal mercury, which is liquid at room temperature, is highly reflective and has been designed to survey the strip of sky that passes overhead each night.
  • The telescope was inaugurated by Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh. He said that this would help India to become a leading country in the field of astronomy and study of the sky.
  • It will also expand the ability to study and share the mysteries of the skies and astronomy with the rest of the world.
