World Down Syndrome Day 2023 : 21st March

Every year 21st March is observed as World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD). The day is observed in an effort to raise awareness of Down syndrome and advocate for the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down syndrome. The date for WDSD was chosen to reflect the trisomic specificity of chromosome 21, which causes Down syndrome. Down syndrome is named after the British physician John Langdon Down, who first discovered the syndrome in 1866.

On this occasion, National Gallery of Modern Art, NGMA is organizing Painting and Pottery Workshop.

Theme :

The theme for World Syndrome day 2023 is “With Us Not For Us”.

History :

World Down Syndrome Day was first observed on March 21, 2006 and was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about Down syndrome and promoting the rights and dignity of people with this condition.

What is Down syndrome?

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of third copy of chromosome-21. Most people have 46 chromosomes in all of their cells, but in people with Down syndrome they have 47 chromosomes and because of that they look differently and learn differently.

Rohan Bopanna has become the oldest tennis player to win the ATP Masters 1000 title.

  • India’s Rohan Bopanna became the oldest tennis player to win an ATP Masters 1000 title when he won the men’s doubles title at the Indian Wells Masters 2023 tournament in California on 18 March with Australian partner Matthew Ebden.
  • Rohan Bopanna, 43, and Mathieu Ebden, 35, won the BNP Paribas Open trophy after defeating Wesley Koolhof of Netherlands and Neil Skupski of Britain 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 in the final.
  • Prior to Bopanna, Canadian Daniel Nestor was the oldest player to win an ATP Masters 1000 title after winning the 2015 Cincinnati Masters at the age of 42.
  • Bopanna, a former world No. 3 in men’s doubles, was ranked 15th in the ATP doubles rankings before the tournament. After winning the Indian Wells Masters, he has reached the 11th position in the live doubles tennis rankings.

Seylan Bank of Sri Lanka opened INR denominated Nostro account with Indian Bank in Mumbai.

  • Seylan Bank of Sri Lanka has opened an Indian rupee-denominated Nostro account with Indian Bank in Mumbai.
  • This arrangement will help in settling cross border transactions between the two countries using the Indian Rupee.
  • Sri Lankan banks are opening Nostro accounts in banks in India. Similarly, banks on the Indian side have created similar accounts in Sri Lanka for reciprocal arrangements.
  • State-run Bank of Ceylon did its first rupee settlement in December 2022 and has completed transactions of over Rs 1 crore.
  • Similarly, State Bank of India has started rupee settlement from March 2023, while Indian Bank is carrying out similar transactions from January 2023.

Punjab Police arrested 78 activists in a massive drive against ‘Waris Punjab De’.

  • The Punjab Police has launched a state-wide combing operation to nab the members of Waris Punjab De (WPD) group involved in criminal activities.
  • Many criminal cases are registered against these members. So far 78 people have been arrested in this connection and many others have been detained for questioning.
  • During the State-wide operation, nine weapons, including one .315 bore rifle, seven rifles of 12 bore, one revolver, and 373 live cartridges of different calibers have been recovered so far.
  • The spokesperson said that the members of ‘Waris Punjab De’ are accused of promoting enmity between communities, attempt to murder, attack on policemen and obstructing the work of government employees.
  • An FIR was lodged against the members of this group on 24 February in connection with the attack on Ajnala police station.

Civil 20 inception meeting under India G20 presidency was held in Nagpur.

  • The Civil 20 inception meeting under India G20 presidency was held in Nagpur, Maharashtra from 20 to 21 March.
  • Civil Society- C-20 is one of the working groups under the G-20 Secretariat which provides a platform for civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations to air their concerns and brainstorm on various issues.
  • In this preliminary meeting, 14 different topics prepared for the C-20 were discussed.
  • 357 delegates are participating in this establishment conference. Representatives of 26 countries and 130 international delegates have reached Nagpur to participate in the Civil 20 inception meeting.
  • Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari attended the closing ceremony of the meeting on 21 March. Meanwhile, major roads and intersections of Nagpur city have been illuminated with lights and display boards to welcome the C-20 delegates.

World Sparrow Day was celebrated in the National Zoological Park.

National Zoological Park, New Delhi (Delhi Zoo) celebrated World Sparrow Day on 20 March. This day is celebrated to increase public knowledge about sparrow’s declining population and the need for its conservation. This occasion offers people a chance to unite and take action to protect and conserve sparrows.

The National Zoological Park celebrated the event by organizing activities like making of bird feeders, presentation of a film describing the importance of sparrows and a visit to the zoo. 50 students of Voluntary Organization named Butterfly participated in this program with full enthusiasm. The participants prepared a feeder for the birds using bamboo. The visit to the zoo was organized with the aim of instilling in the youth a sense of wonder and appreciation for nature. All the students who participated in the program were given participation certificates.

Theme :

The theme of the day in 2023 World Sparrow Day is, “I Love the Sparrow”, emphasizes the role of individuals and communities in conserving the sparrow.

History of the Day :

The first World Sparrow Day was organized on 2010 and is celebrated annually since then. Mohammad Dilawar founded The Nature Forever Society to raise awareness about sparrows.

Indian Higher Education Meet 2023 inaugurated in Dhaka.

  • High Commissioner Pranay Verma and Bangladesh Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni jointly inaugurated the Indian Higher Education Meet 2023 on 18 March. It was organized under the aegis of the Study in India program in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  • Higher educational institutions from different parts of India participated in the event. Some of the top ranking educational institutes of India participated in this event.
  • The Indian High Commissioner invited Bangladeshi students to take advantage of India’s globally prestigious higher education system & build new bridges of friendship and understanding between the youth of the 2 countries.
  • Bangladesh Education Minister Dr. Deepu Moni recognized the important role of education in promoting better understanding between India & Bangladesh and thanked Study in India for taking the initiative to organize the event in Dhaka.

Study in India :

Study in India program is a flagship project launched in 2018 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. This program is designed to encourage and invite the global student community to pursue their higher education in India. Since its inception, the Study in India program has attracted over 150 students.

  • In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, The Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden, (Asia’s largest Tulip Garden) has been thrown open to the public in Srinagar on 19 March 2023.
  • Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha participated in the opening ceremony and invited people from all over the world to visit J&K and discover the mesmerizing beauty of 1.6 million tulip flowers and enjoy the warm hospitality of the people of J&K.
  • The Lt Governor said that an unprecedented 3.60 lakh tourists had visited the Tulip Garden last year and he was confident that this year the number would further increase.

The Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden, (Asia’s largest Tulip Garden) :

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden is a tulip garden at the First Model Floriculture Centre, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Spread over an area of ​​about 30 hectares (74 acres), it is the largest tulip garden in Asia. It is situated at the base of Zabarwan range, built on sloping ground in terraced style with seven terraces overlooking Dal Lake. The garden was opened in 2007 with the aim of promoting floriculture and tourism in the Kashmir Valley. It was earlier known as Siraj Bagh.
