Defense Ministry signed a contract for the purchase of six Dornier-228 aircraft for the IAF from HAL at a cost of Rs 667 crore.

The Ministry of Defense has signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to procure six Dornier-228 aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF) on 10 March, 2023 at a cost of Rs 667 crore.
This aircraft has been used by the Indian Air Force for route transport activities and to meet communication requirements.
In addition, they have also been used for the training of transport pilots of the Indian Air Force.
The current batch of six aircraft are being procured with advanced and fuel efficient engines with five bladed composite propellers.
The aircraft is ideally suited for medium range operations activities off the limited prepared/short runways of the North Eastern region and island chains of India. The induction of these six aircraft will further enhance the operational capability of the Indian Air Force in remote areas.
