- Yameen was accused of abusing his position and taking US$1 million from a private company to facilitate the sale of sawmills for the development of the resort.
- Yameen, who lost power in 2018, was sentenced to five years in prison and fined $5 million in 2019 for embezzlement of state funds.
- After sentencing, Yameen was transferred to house arrest in 2020, but was freed months later.
