Former NATO General Petr Pavel becomes new President of Czech Republic
Retired NATO General Petr Pavel has been elected as the new President of the Czech Republic on 28 January 2023.
With 97% of ballots cast in nearly 15,000 polling stations counted by the Czech statistics office, Mr. Pavel had 57.8% of the vote and Mr. Babis had 42.2%.
Mr. Pavel is a former chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, the alliance’s highest military body.
Like India, the President of the Czech Republic does not have a direct or active role in running the country, yet he chooses the prime minister and head of the central bank, is consulted on foreign policy, and influences government policies.
