G7 is an informal forum of major industrialized countries, which include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States. EU representatives are always present at the annual meeting of the G7 heads of state and government. Germany holds presides the G7 summit in 2022.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has invited India, Argentina, Indonesia, Senegal and South Africa as partner countries to the 2022 summit. The G7 president has announced Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky will attend virtually on 27th June.

The leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) began three-day talks in Germany’s Bavarian Alps on 26th June. One of the 1st announcements was a $600 billion infrastructure initiative to help developing countries tackle climate change. The initiative is being seen as the West’s response to China’s massive Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

US President Joe Biden said, this is not an aid or a donation but an investment that will provide returns for everyone, including the American people and the people of all our countries. This will give a boost to all our economies, he said. China has been accused of piling in unforgivable loans to low-income countries to be part of its trillion-dollar BRI push. EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said the G7 is offering sustainable, quality infrastructure and will listen closely to recipient countries.
