  • The government has appointed Lt Gen Anil Chauhan as the next Chief of Defense Staff (CDS).
  • In a career spanning over 40 years, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan held several command, staff and assistant appointments & had vast experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir & North-East India.
  • The post of Chief of Defense Staff has been lying vacant since the death of General Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash on 8th December 2021.

Who is Lt Gen Anil Chauhan?

Born on 18th May 1961, Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981. Mr. Anil Chauahan is an alumnus of National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla & Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. In the rank of Major General, the officer commanded an infantry division in the crucial Baramulla sector of the Northern Command. Later as a lieutenant general, he commanded a corps in the North East and later became the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command from September 2019 until his retirement from service in May 2021.
