India abstains from voting on UNSC resolution on situation in Ukraine

On the issue of Ukraine crisis, the vote was taken on 26 February 2022 resolution placed in the United Nations Security Council. 11 members of the 15-member Security Council voted in favor while Russia voted against it. India, the United Arab Emirates and China did not take part in the vote. Russia used veto power on this resolution to block it from being passed.

India has said in its statement that this crisis should be resolved diplomatically and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected. India has called for an immediate end to the acts of violence and assault. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made the same request to Russian President Vladimir Putin in a telephonic conversation with him. India has said that all member states must abide by international law and United Nations principles.

India believes that dialogue is the only way to resolve disputes. The repatriation of Indian students and citizens stranded in Ukraine is an immediate priority of the government. India is deeply concerned by the developments in Ukraine.

India has clarified its position and said that it is in touch with both the sides in a balanced and coordinated manner. India has urged all the parties to start dialogue.
