Indian Army Day is celebrated on 15th January and in the year 2023 it marks the 75th anniversary of Indian Army Day. It is the day Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa (then Lieutenant General) took over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India in the year 1949 .

History :
Originally, the Indian Army was formed on April 1, 1895 under the British rule and was called the British Indian Army. After India gained independence in the year 1947, the country got its first Indian head of state on January 15, 1949 itself. Lieutenant General KM Cariappa took over as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in 1949 from General Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India. The day also honors the soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for the country.
