World Ozone Day or International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer is observed on 16th September. The purpose of this day is to create awareness about the importance & necessity of the ozone layer which is the only protection on earth against the UV rays emanating from the sun. The United Nations Environment Program also aims to raise awareness about the importance of getting rid of substances that damage the ozone layer. It also calls for time-targeted action to protect the earth’s defenses.
The Theme in 2022 is “Global Cooperation Protecting Life on Earth”.
The United Nations General Assembly declared 16 September as the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer in 1994. This was done in 1987 to commemorate the date of the signing of the ‘Montreal Protocol on Substances Depleting the Ozone Layer’ by the governments of 46 countries around the world. It was also known as the “Montreal Protocol”.
