On 14th March each year, the International Day of Action for Rivers is observed to promote awareness of the importance of river systems on planet Earth. The day tries to focus attention on unequal access to clean water and pollution caused by human activities. This year the 26th International Day of Action for Rivers is being celebrated. The focus is on river conservation with community participation. If rivers are to be protected and used wisely, people must come together to manage river stewardship.
The theme of the Day in 2023 is “Rights of Rivers,”.
The first International Day of Action for Rivers was observed on March 1997. During the inaugural International Conference of Dam Affected Peoples in Curitiba, Brazil, delegates from more than 20 countries adopted the International Day of Action Against Dams and Rivers, Water and Life. It also received permission to mark the day on 14 March, which coincides with Brazil’s Day of Action Against Large Dams.
