History :
The 1st International Plastic Bag Free Day was observed on 3rd July 2008, when it was started by ReZero, a member of Zero Waste Europe (ZWE). The holiday was celebrated only in Catalonia in its inaugural year. However, a year later, ZWE launched the International Plastic Bag Free Day for the European Union.
Significance :
The main goal of the day is to raise awareness about the increasing harm caused to the environment by the use of this non-biodegradable substance. This is worrying to learn that a plastic bag takes 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill, despite the fact that collective efforts over the past 10 years have so far reduced the impact.
