Chief Justice of India UU Lalit has recommended Justice D Y Chandrachud as his successor.
Present Chief Justice UU Lalit will retires on 8 November 8 2022.
Justice D Y Chandrachud will takes over as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI) on 8 November 2022.
Justice DY Chandrachud, will have a tenure of little over two years – the longest in the recent past.
About Justice DY Chandrachud
Justice D Y Chandrachud has obtained two advanced degrees in law from Harvard University.
In 1998, he was appointed Additional Solicitor General of India.
He also taught International Law at Oklahoma University and was a visiting professor in Comparative Constitutional Law at the University of Bombay from 1988 to 1997.
Justice D Y Chandrachud was appointed a judge in 2000 in the Bombay High Court. He was appointed the chief justice of the Allahabad High Court in 2013 and was elevated to the Supreme Court three years later.
Only father-son duo Chief Justice of India
Justice D Y Chandrachud is the son of former CJI YV Chandrachud, this will be the only father-son duo to have reached the position of the CJI.
Justice YV Chandrachud was appointed to the post of the CJI in 1978 and he retired in 1985, serving the longest tenure of seven years at the post till date.
