Mr. S Somnath takes over as Secretary, Department of Space

14 January 2022 Mr. S Somnath took over as Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman of the Space Commission.
He completed four years as the Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram.
He also served as the Director of Liquid Propulsion Systems Center (LPSC), Waliamala for two and a half years.
Mr. Somnath did B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from TKM College of Engineering, Kollam and Masters in Aerospace Engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore with Gold Medal in Structures, Dynamics and Control.
Mr. Somnath is an expert in the field of systems engineering of launch vehicles.
He has been instrumental in development of overall architecture, design of propulsion stages, vehicle integration processes in PSLV and GSLV Mk III. He received the ‘Team Excellence Award’ for GSLV Mk-III development.
He is a recipient of ‘Space Gold Medal’ from the Astronautical Society of India.
