The nation is celebrating Vijay Diwas on 16th December to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. On this day the sacrifices of war heroes are remembered and rich tributes are paid to them.
History :
On 16th December 1971, the Chief of the Pakistani Army, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, with 93,000 soldiers, unconditionally surrendered following their defeat to the Allied forces led by Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora in Dhaka. The end of the war resulted in the independence of Bangladesh.
It was also the largest military surrender since World War II.
