President Election 2022 will be held on 18th July & the counting of votes will be done on 21st July.

The term of the country’s President Ram Nath Kovind will end on 24th July and President Election 2022 will be held on 18th July & counting of votes will be done on 21st July. The Election Commission has issued a notice saying that nominations can be filled by 29th June. The names of the candidates have been announced on behalf of the opposition and also from the government side.

How is the election of the President in the country?

The presidential election in the country is a bit different & complicated than other elections. There is no direct participation of the public in the election of the President in the country, on the contrary, the representatives of the people MPs and MLAs participate in the election of the President. But the MPs or MLAs who are nominated are not considered eligible to participate in this election because they are nominated & are not directly elected by the public. Similarly, the members of the Legislative Assemblies also do not participate in this election.

Who chooses the President of the country?

Article 54 of the Constitution deals with the procedure for the election of the President in India. An Electoral College is constituted for the election of the President in which the elected members of both the Houses of Parliament & the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of the States vote. Hence it is also called indirect election.

The Electoral College consists of 776 Members of Parliament and 4,809 Members of Legislative Assembly. The college got total of 10,86,431 votes. Every vote has a price. The vote value of each member of parliament is 700. This price is decided according to the population of the state. After the nomination, the ballot papers are given to the MPs & MLAs who are involved in the election process to vote.
