Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan died on 13 May 2022 at the age of 73 and Mohamed was elected as president of the UAE the next day.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been elected President of the UAE a day after the death of former leader Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Sheikh Mohammed was elected by the Federal Supreme Council to become the ruler of the oil-rich country founded by his father in 1971.
Sheikh Mohammed, often referred to as ‘MBZ’, met with members of the Federal Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates made up of the rulers of the seven emirates. His ascension, which was widely expected, formalizes his position as the leader of the United Arab Emirates.
