Vo Van Thuong was elected as the new President of Vietnam.

  • Vietnam’s National Assembly on 2nd March elected Communist Party veteran Vo Van Thuong as the country’s new president.
  • Thuong received 98.38% of the vote, according to the parliament’s online portal.
  • Thuong’s election follows the abrupt resignation of her predecessor, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, in January 2023, whom the party accused of wrongdoing.
  • Thuong, 52, is the youngest member of the party’s Politburo, the country’s top decision-making body, but is considered a party veteran after starting his political career at university in communist youth organizations.
