Vietnam’s National Assembly on 2nd March elected Communist Party veteran Vo Van Thuong as the country’s new president.
Thuong received 98.38% of the vote, according to the parliament’s online portal.
Thuong’s election follows the abrupt resignation of her predecessor, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, in January 2023, whom the party accused of wrongdoing.
Thuong, 52, is the youngest member of the party’s Politburo, the country’s top decision-making body, but is considered a party veteran after starting his political career at university in communist youth organizations.
