World Braille Day, observed on January 4, emphasizes the importance of Braille as a form of communication for the partially blind and visually impaired. The United Nations is celebrating this day since 2019. World Braille Day also celebrates the birth anniversary of Louis Braille, who was born on January 4, 1809.
Significance :
The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about the Braille language, which seeks to bridge the gap between the general and differently abled persons. Coupvray, France spawned the manufacturer of a widely adopted touch device that enables visually impaired persons to read and write.
What is Braille?
Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols, using six dots to represent each letter and number, and even musical, mathematical and scientific symbols. Braille (named after its inventor in 19th century France, Louis Braille) is used by blind and partially sighted people to read the same books and magazines that are printed in visual font.
