World Lion Day is celebrated globally on 10th August. The day aims to spread awareness about lions and the urgent need to make efforts towards their conservation. The threat of extinction of lions is silently looming around the world. Lions are believed to have roamed Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East well around 3 million years ago.

History :

In 2013, the 1st World Lion Day was celebrated. It was founded by Derek and Beverly Joubert of the Big Cat Initiative and National Geographic. His aim was to keep the lions safe in their natural environment. Additionally, they aim to collaborate on security measures with areas that are close to feral cats.

Significance :

The purpose of World Lion Day, is to raise public awareness about the importance of lion conservation. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has designated lions as a vulnerable species on the Red List of Threatened Species.
