- He won 255 votes, defeating Oli Ahmad, who secured 88 votes.
- 343 MPs participated in the election.

- Alamgir is a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
- He succeeded Mohammed Shahabuddin, who resigned on health grounds.
