South Africa’s Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay wins 2026 Nobel Peace Prize
On 9 October 2026, South African judge Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, 85, won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday “for her efforts to promote peace and international law”, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.
- “A common thread runs from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid to her service as a judge in some of the key international court cases of our time,” the committee said.
- Navi Pillay was chair of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory that concluded last year that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza.
- The Nobel Peace Prize, worth 12 million Swedish crowns, or about $1.2 million, is due to be presented in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, who founded the awards in his 1895 will.

PERM suspension does not automatically affect existing H-1B visas: MEA
On 9 October 2026, India has expressed concern over the US Department of Labor’s decision concerning the Permanent Labor Certification (PERM) programme for certain companies, stating that the move does not advance the shared ambitions of the two countries.
- In a statement, India clarified that PERM is distinct from the H-1B visa programme.
- The suspension of PERM applications does not, by itself, affect the validity of existing H-1B visas or the status of H-1B visa holders and their dependents, though there could be some impact on the permanent-residency or Green Card process of eligible employees of the affected companies.
- India also referred to comments made by the US Vice President, stating that such descriptions were unwarranted and ignored the fact that Indian professionals in the United States are highly educated and skilled contributors to its economy and innovation ecosystem.

Free LPG cylinders, AC electric buses: UP Cabinet approves more than 30 proposals
On 9 October 2026, The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved a number of proposals, including continuation of the scheme to provide two free LPG cylinders in a year, facilitating the operation of 1,725 air-conditioned electric buses, launching of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Skill Training and Employment Zone development scheme, and providing three sarees every year to the state’s Anganwadi workers and helpers.
- The UP Cabinet approved a proposal to continue the scheme of providing one free LPG cylinder refill each on Diwali and Holi to the eligible beneficiaries of ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ in the financial year 2026-27.
- The Yogi Adityanath government will also facilitate the operation of 1,725 air-conditioned electric buses.
- The scheme aims to develop Uttar Pradesh into an “ultimate sourcing hub for skilled manpower” and a “global manpower hub.” Under this initiative, an integrated system for skill training and employment will be developed across nine zones, covering all 75 districts of the state.
UP’s Jewar airport to be renamed after PM Modi
On 9 October 2026, The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Friday approved a proposal to rename the Noida International Airport at Jewar as ‘Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar’, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said.
- “The Council of Ministers reiterates its resolve to work continuously with full dedication, energy and commitment to realise the vision of a developed UP and a developed India by 2047,” he said.
- The mega aviation project initially spanned approximately 1,334 hectares (over 3,300 acres) for Phase-I, with ultimate expansion plans designed to cover over 5,000 hectares, and is billed to be India’s largest upon full completion.
- Briefing reporters, Adityanath said the UP Cabinet had passed a resolution congratulating Prime Minister Modi on completing 25 years of continuous public service as head of government, with October 7 marking the milestone.
