BIS expands Hallmark Unique Identification based silver hallmarking ecosystem

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has expanded the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID)-based silver hallmarking ecosystem with 341 silver Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) across 102 districts, and more than 25,000 silver jewellers are registered with BIS ahead of the festive season. The BIS informed that since the launch of the Silver HUID portal on 1 September last year, over 77 lakh silver jewellery pieces have already been hallmarked with HUID. The six-digit HUID under the Hallmarking System Assures Traceability of Silver Jewellery and Artefacts.

India has signed a deal with the US for the acquisition of Javelin anti-tank guided missile systems for the Indian Army. This marks India’s formal entry as a customer of the famed shoulder-fired weapon even as both countries work towards its eventual joint production in India. The US Embassy & Consulates in India, in a statement yesterday, said that the Indian Army had signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance for the purchase of the Javelin.

The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal and Tibet has risen to 579, with 1924 people still missing. According to the data released by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 579 bodies have been recovered so far, while 101 injured people are undergoing treatment in hospitals. The missing figure of 1,924 includes people from hydropower projects, foreign nationals, civilians and security and government personnel.
