Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, Georg Nagel win 2026 Nobel medicine prize

Peter Hegemann Scientists Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for “discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics,” the award-giving body said on Monday.

  • Karl Deisseroth, a 54-year-old American, Hegemann, a 71-year-old German, and Georg Nagel, a 73-year-old German, were selected by the Nobel Assembly of Sweden’s Karolinska Institute medical university and receive a prize sum amounting to 12 million Swedish crowns ($1.2 million), which is shared if there are multiple winners.
  • The five original Nobel Prizes were created under the terms of Swedish inventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel’s will and have been awarded since 1901, with only limited interruptions, chiefly during the World War One and World War Two.
  • A sixth award, the economics prize, was established in 1968 by Sweden’s central bank, the Riksbank.

India wins four gold, one silver at 19th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics

India delivered a strong performance at the 19th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) 2026 with all five members of the national team returning with medals.

  • The team won four gold medals and one silver at the international competition held in Hanoi, Vietnam, from September 25 to October 5.

Bengal approves 14,454 govt posts, Rs 50,000 scheme for unmarried women pursuing higher education

The government also raised the monthly remuneration of ‘Karmabandhus’, part-time support staff, from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000, while increasing the food allowance for SC and ST hostel students from Rs 1,800 to Rs 3,300 on 6 October 2026.

  • The chief minister also announced an increase in the monthly remuneration of ‘Karmabandhus’, contractual sanitation workers engaged under the land and land revenue department, from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 with effect from this month.
  • The food allowance for SC and ST students residing in government hostels has also been increased from Rs 1,800 to Rs 3,300 per month, he said.
  • Under the scheme, beneficiaries will receive Rs 17,000 in the first and second year each, and Rs 16,000 in the third year, taking the total assistance to Rs 50,000.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to launch Fleet Support Ship-1 in Visakhapatnam

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will launch Fleet Support Ship-1 (FSS-1) and lay the keel of Fleet Support Ship-5 (FSS-5) at Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam, today on 6 October 2026.

  • Ministry of Defence said that the upgraded Slipway-4, with its extended length and enhanced load-bearing capability, supported by the 300-tonne Goliath Crane, will enable the shipyard to build and launch vessels of up to 45 thousand deadweight tonnes, significantly expanding its capacity to undertake large and complex platforms.
  • It said that FSS-1, the first of five Fleet Support Ships being built for the Indian Navy, will enter the waters of the Bay of Bengal just 18 months after steel cutting.
  • The keel laying of FSS-5 will mark the programme’s steady march towards series production.

Centre clears elevation of three High Court Chief Justices as SC judges

In a post on X, Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal announced that the President, after consultation with Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, had appointed the three Chief Justices as judges of the apex court on 5 October 2026.

  • Justice Agarwal, born on April 30, 1966, was appointed as a judge of the Allahabad High Court on November 21, 2011.
  • She became the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court on July 23, 2023.
  • Justice Upadhyaya, born on June 16, 1965, was appointed as a puisne Judge of the Allahabad High Court on November 21, 2011 and became a permanent Judge on August 6, 2013.

CM takes stock of flooding in Lucknow’s low-lying areas; announces embankments along Gomti

Rising water levels in the Gomti River have created flood-like conditions in low-lying areas of Lucknow on 5 October 2026.

  • The chief minister met flood-affected residents in Harda village of Itaunja area to inquire about their well-being and distributed relief materials to some families.
  • Speaking on the occasion, Adityanath said, “Over the past 10 days, more than 50 districts in Uttar Pradesh have experienced heavy rainfall.
  • He said areas between Bakshi Ka Talab, Lucknow North, and Faizullaganj to Naimish is currently grappling with waterlogging and flood-like conditions.
