Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson wins Nobel Prize in literature
On 8 October 2026, Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson won the Nobel Prize in literature “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.
- Toronto-born Carson, 76, draws on themes and stories from ancient Greek and Roman literature for works that often blend elements of poetry, essay and fiction.
- Her books include “Eros the Bittersweet,” a look at the pleasure and pain of desire in ancient Greek literature, verse novel “Autobiography of Red,” “Men in the Off Hours,” a collection of poetry and prose that won Canada’s Griffin Prize for poetry in 2001 and “Norma Jeane Baker of Troy,” which compares Marilyn Monroe and Helen of Troy.
- Carson has taught classics at several North American universities and has lived in Iceland, where she and her husband, Robert Currie, were granted citizenship in 2022.

GST Council removes arrest powers of tax officers, eases compliance rules for businesses
On 8 October 2026, The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council on approved a series of taxpayer-friendly reforms, including the removal of arrest powers from tax officers and a significant increase in the prosecution threshold to Rs 5 crore from the existing Rs 1 crore.
- The decisions were taken at the 57th meeting of the GST Council chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the national capital on Thursday.
- “GST Council scraps arrest power of tax officers; raises prosecution threshold to Rs 5 crore from 1 crore,” the Finance Minister told reporters during the press conference.
- The government will also speed up the refund process, with the acknowledgement period for refund applications being reduced to 10 days from the current 15 days.

Assam’s Nameri Tiger Reserve gets global recognition for conservation practices
On 8 October 2026, The Nameri Tiger Reserve in Assam has received global recognition for conservation of big cats and protected forest management.
- After fulfilling prescribed norms for tiger conservation and protected area management, CA|TS Approved status was accorded under the Conservation Assured | Tiger Standards (CA|TS) framework, field director Piraisoodan B said in a statement.
- CA|TS is a globally recognised framework that assesses tiger reserve management, including wildlife protection, habitat management, monitoring, administration and community participation.
- Nameri National Park and Tiger Reserve is located in the northern part of Sonitpur district, with a total area of 464 sq km, which includes a core area of 200 sq km.

The Central Armed Police Forces (General Administration) Act, 2026 came into force today, with 8 October 2026 marked as its commencement date.
- The Union Home Ministry issued a notification designating 8th October as the commencement date for the legislation’s provisions.
- President Droupadi Murmu had given her assent to the Act on the 9th of April this year.
