Pakistan Closes Airspace to Indian Airlines Amid Rising Tensions

Amid rising India-Pakistan tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan announced on 24 April that it will ban Indian airlines from using its airspace. The restriction applies to India-registered aircraft and those owned or leased by Indian operators.

Air India stated that the ban will lead to rerouted flights to/from North America, UK, Europe, and the Middle East. IndiGo Airlines also confirmed disruptions to some international flights.

A senior Air Traffic Controller mentioned that flight durations will vary depending on alternate routes chosen. Pakistan’s airspace is strategically important and commonly used by Indian airlines, making this restriction significantly impactful.
