India’s fisheries sector is becoming an important pillar of livelihoods, food security, exports and the Blue Economy, with the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) driving modernisation and sustainable growth.
- PMMSY launched: 2020; completes 6 years on 10 September 2026.
- Total outlay: ₹20,750 crore.
- Budget 2026–27 allocation: Record ₹2,500 crore under PMMSY.
- Approved projects: ₹21,394.88 crore as of 11 August 2026, including a Central share of ₹9,510.89 crore.
- Fish production: Increased from 141.64 lakh tonnes (2019–20) to a record 197.75 lakh tonnes (2024–25).
- Fisheries exports: Rose from ₹46,663 crore (2019–20) to ₹73,890 crore (2025–26).
- Employment: PMMSY has created direct and indirect employment for 58 lakh people.
