Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal on 9 May 2026. The oath was administered by Governor RN Ravi at the Brigade Parade Grounds in Kolkata. Along with him, five BJP leaders — Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Nisith Pramanik, and Kshudiram Tudu — were sworn in as Cabinet Ministers.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and several BJP and NDA leaders. The event was held on Pochishe Boishak, celebrating the 165th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the BJP won a decisive victory with 207 seats out of 294, ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress, which secured 80 seats. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Suvendu Adhikari on becoming the Chief Minister.
