Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered train between Jind and Sonipat from Jind railway station, Haryana, on 17 July 2026.
Key Highlights
- First hydrogen-powered train in India, designed, engineered, and integrated using indigenous technology.
- Route: Jind – Sonipat (Haryana).
- Maximum design speed: 110 km/h; operational speed on this route: 75 km/h.
- Features a 10-coach configuration, making it one of the world’s longest hydrogen-powered passenger trains.
- Powered by a 3,200 HP hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system, among the most powerful hydrogen trainsets in operation.
- Uses hydrogen fuel cell technology, producing only water vapour as a by-product, resulting in zero carbon emissions during operation.
- Does not require continuous overhead electric lines, as electricity is generated onboard from hydrogen.
- Equipped with advanced safety systems to detect hydrogen leaks, heat, flames, and smoke.
- With this launch, India joins Germany, Japan, China, and the United States among countries operating hydrogen-powered trains.
