On 5 August 2026, Parliament passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, increasing the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India (CJI). The amendment aims to reduce the backlog of cases and improve the efficiency of the Supreme Court.
5 अगस्त 2026 को संसद ने सुप्रीम कोर्ट (न्यायाधीशों की संख्या) संशोधन विधेयक, 2026 पारित किया। इसके तहत भारत के मुख्य न्यायाधीश (CJI) को छोड़कर सुप्रीम कोर्ट के न्यायाधीशों की स्वीकृत संख्या 33 से बढ़ाकर 37 कर दी गई। इस संशोधन का उद्देश्य लंबित मामलों का बोझ कम करना तथा सुप्रीम कोर्ट की कार्यक्षमता बढ़ाना है।
