Vikas Kaushal Appointed as CMD of HPCL

Vikas Kaushal has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) on March 7, 2025. His appointment is historic as he becomes the first private sector executive to lead a state-run oil refinery.

With over 30 years of experience in the energy, oil & gas, and power sectors, Kaushal has previously served as Managing Director and Country Head for Kearney India. He holds a chemical engineering degree from Panjab University and an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. His expertise in digital transformation, refinery maintenance, and net-zero strategies is expected to drive HPCL’s growth.

Kaushal’s five-year tenure comes at a crucial time as the government strengthens public sector leadership. His vision and leadership are set to enhance HPCL’s strategic direction and contribute significantly to India’s energy sector.

  • Extension of Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran’s Term as Chief Economic Adviser

    The tenure of Chief Economic Adviser Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran has been extended by two years, now set to continue until March 2027.     Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran was born in 1963 and is an esteemed Indian economist. He holds an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Before his appointment as Chief Economic Adviser, he had a distinguished career in the private sector, including roles at Credit Suisse and Bank Julius Baer. He has also served as the Dean of the IFMR Graduate School of Business and a Visiting Professor of Economics at Krea University.

  • Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) on October 31

    Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) is observed annually on October 31 to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s Iron Man who unified 562 princely states after Independence. The 2025 celebration, held at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat, is of special significance as it marks Patel’s 150th birth anniversary.

    The event features a grand parade and cultural festival with participation from Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), State Police, and NCC cadets. Highlights include cavalry and camel-mounted contingents, martial arts displays, and performances by women personnel from CISF and CRPF. The Guard of Honor to the Prime Minister will be led by a female officer, symbolizing women’s empowerment.

    Indigenous dog breeds like the Rampur Hound and Mudhol Hound (“Riya”) will perform demonstrations. The celebration will also include Assam Police’s motorcycle stunts, BSF’s Camel Band, and a Surya Kiran air show by the Indian Air Force.

    State and UT tableaux will showcase the theme “Unity in Diversity,” while brass bands and cultural performances by 900 artists will highlight India’s heritage. Gallantry award winners from BSF and CRPF will be honored for bravery in anti-Naxal and counter-terror operations.

    From November 1–15, 2025, Bharat Parv will be hosted in Ekta Nagar, featuring cultural programs, food festivals, and will conclude with Birsa Munda Jayanti celebrations, emphasizing national unity, cultural diversity, and patriotism.

  • Government Launches Model Women-Friendly Gram Panchayats Nationwide

    New Delhi, March 5, 2025 – The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has launched a pioneering initiative to promote gender-sensitive governance at the grassroots level. The Model Women-Friendly Gram Panchayat (MWFGP) initiative was unveiled at a National Convention held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, as part of the International Women’s Day 2025 celebrations.

    Key Highlights of the Initiative

    • The initiative aims to establish at least one Model Women-Friendly Gram Panchayat in each district, fostering safety, inclusivity, and gender equality.
    • It aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of strengthening Viksit Bharat through Viksit Panchayats.
    • A dedicated Monitoring Dashboard was launched to track the progress of the initiative.
    • The convention included virtual training programs for elected representatives and officials from selected Gram Panchayats.
    • Best practices and success stories of women-friendly initiatives were presented.

    The event was attended by Union Minister of State, Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel (Ministry of Panchayati Raj & Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying) and Union Minister of State, Anupriya Patel (Ministry of Health & Family Welfare). Other prominent attendees included Vivek Bharadwaj, Secretary, Ministry of Panchayati Raj, and Sushil Kumar Lohani, Additional Secretary.

    Representatives from various ministries, State Institutes of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj (SIRD&PRs), and international organizations such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) participated. Around 350 delegates, including elected representatives and officials from selected Gram Panchayats, attended physically or virtually.

    Upcoming Nationwide Mahila Gram Sabhas

    To further strengthen women’s participation in governance, the Ministry will organize Mahila Gram Sabhas nationwide on March 8, 2025, coinciding with International Women’s Day.

  • Ghazala Hashmi Becomes Virginia’s First Muslim and Indian-American Lieutenant Governor

    India-born Ghazala Hashmi has made history by becoming Virginia’s newly elected Lieutenant Governor, the first Muslim and South Asian American to hold a statewide office in the state. Born in Hyderabad, India, she moved to the U.S. at age four and won the 2025 election held on November 4, defeating Republican John Reid with 54.2% votes.

    A Democrat, Hashmi began her political career in 2019 when she flipped a Republican-held Senate seat and later chaired the Senate Education and Health Committee. Her campaign focused on education reform, reproductive rights, and gun control.

    As Lieutenant Governor, she will preside over the Virginia State Senate (Democrats 21–19 majority) and influence key legislative priorities. Her victory represents a powerful symbol of diversity and immigrant representation in U.S. politics, strengthening ties between Indian-American and mainstream American communities.
