Karnataka is set for a major leadership change as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah resigned on 28 May 2026, paving the way for Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to become the state’s next Chief Minister. Shivakumar will take oath on 3 June 2026 in Bengaluru, becoming Karnataka’s 25th Chief Minister.
The transition follows consultations within the Congress leadership, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, aimed at maintaining party unity and resolving the long-standing Siddaramaiah–Shivakumar power-sharing issue.
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot accepted Siddaramaiah’s resignation and dissolved the Council of Ministers. While Siddaramaiah is expected to remain influential in national politics, Shivakumar faces the challenge of managing state finances, balancing social and political interests, and implementing Congress’s welfare commitments ahead of future elections.
