Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Sweden’s highest civilian honour, the Royal Order of the Polar Star, Commander Grand Cross, during his visit to Gothenburg on 17 May 2026.
The award was presented by Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden in the presence of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Instituted in 1748, the honour is Sweden’s highest distinction awarded to a Head of Government.
The Polar Star symbolises enlightenment and overcoming the “darkness of ignorance.” PM Modi dedicated the honour to the people of India and the strong India-Sweden friendship.
With this, Narendra Modi has received his 31st international honour, reflecting India’s growing global influence and diplomatic stature.
