The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has granted Hindus unrestricted access to the Bhojshala complex in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh for worship and related activities. The decision came after the Madhya Pradesh High Court ruled on 15 May 2026 that Bhojshala is a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati.
The Indore bench of the High Court also quashed the ASI’s 7 April 2003 order that had allowed Muslims to offer namaz at the site every Friday. The court stated that the Centre and ASI can manage and administer the complex.
According to ASI, Bhojshala was historically a centre of learning and research in Sanskrit language, grammar, and literature, besides being a temple. The court further suggested that the Muslim community may seek separate land from the state government for construction of a mosque.
Bhojshala is an 11th-century ASI-protected monument located in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh.
