Neelkanth Mishra Appointed India’s Executive Director at World Bank

On 4 June 2026, noted economist Neelkanth Mishra was appointed as India’s Executive Director at the World Bank for a three-year term. He succeeds Parameswaran Iyer and will be based at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C.

As Executive Director, Mishra will represent India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka on the World Bank Board. His appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).

Neelkanth Mishra is an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and has held several prominent positions, including Chief Economist at Axis Bank, Head of Global Research at Axis Capital, and Managing Director at Credit Suisse. He has also served as a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), Chairperson of UIDAI, and a member of TRAI.

In his new role, he will help oversee the World Bank’s policies, lending decisions, and development projects, particularly those affecting South Asian countries.

Lokhande Prashant Sitaram Appointed New CBSE Chairperson

On 2 June 2026, The Government of India has appointed Lokhande Prashant Sitaram as the new Chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). He succeeds Nidhi Chhibber, who completed her tenure.

At the same time, the Ministry of Education has formed a high-level committee to examine the procurement process related to the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system used by CBSE for evaluation of answer sheets. The panel will review transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the digital marking system and suggest improvements.

CBSE, established in 1962 and headquartered in New Delhi, is India’s largest national education board and conducts major examinations such as Class 10 and 12 Board Exams and CTET. The latest developments aim to strengthen the administration and evaluation processes of the board.

Five New Judges Appointed to Supreme Court of India

On 2 June 2026, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant administered the oath of office to five new judges of the Supreme Court of India. With these appointments, the Supreme Court’s working strength increased to 37 judges against the sanctioned strength of 38.

The newly appointed judges are Justice Sheel Nagu, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Justice Arun Palli, and Senior Advocate V. Mohana. Four of them were serving as Chief Justices of High Courts, while V. Mohana was elevated directly from the Bar.

The appointments are expected to improve judicial efficiency and help reduce the backlog of pending cases. Notably, V. Mohana became only the second woman in India’s history to be directly elevated from the Bar to the Supreme Court, after Justice Indu Malhotra in 2018.

Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani Appointed as New Chief of Defence Staff

The Government has appointed Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani (Retd) as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs. He will succeed General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure ends on 30 May 2026.

Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani is currently serving as the Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat. Earlier, he served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Command. Commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in 1985, he has over 40 years of military experience.

During his distinguished career, he commanded several important formations, including 16 Garhwal Rifles, 17 Mountain Division, and the prestigious 2 Corps on the Western Front. He has also served in key staff and instructional roles, including Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan and Chief Instructor at DSSC Wellington.

For his outstanding service, he has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Sena Medal (SM), and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Appointed as New Chief of the Naval Staff

The Government has appointed Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the new Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). He will succeed Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who is set to retire on 31 May 2026.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan is currently serving as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command and is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare. Commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 July 1987, he is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA) and several prestigious defence institutions in India, the UK, and the USA.

During his distinguished naval career, he commanded several major warships, including INS Vikramaditya, INS Mysore, and INS Kulish. He has also held important positions such as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Chief of Personnel, and Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet.

A recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan is known for his contributions to naval operations, training, and maritime security.

Shashi Shekhar Vempati Appointed New CBFC Chairperson

Shashi Shekhar Vempati, former CEO of Prasar Bharati and an alumnus of IIT Bombay, was appointed as the new Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on 6 May 2026 for a three-year term. He succeeded noted lyricist Prasoon Joshi, who has now become the Chairman of Prasar Bharati. The appointment was announced by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB).

Vempati previously served as the CEO of Prasar Bharati (2017–2022), where he led the modernization of Doordarshan and All India Radio. He also headed Rajya Sabha TV and held senior positions at Infosys Technologies and Niti Digital. He is associated with initiatives like AI4India.org and has served on several broadcasting and technology-related boards.

The CBFC, functioning under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, is responsible for certifying films for public exhibition in India under the Cinematograph Act. It reviews films and issues age-based certifications such as U, UA, A, and S, ensuring compliance with legal and cultural standards.

Prasoon Joshi Appointed Chairman of Prasar Bharati

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting appointed Prasoon Joshi as the Chairman of Prasar Bharati on 2 May 2026.

Prasoon Joshi is a renowned lyricist, writer, and communication expert with extensive experience in advertising, cinema, and public messaging.

Rohit Jain Appointed RBI Deputy Governor (May-2026)

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Rohit Jain, Executive Director (ED) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as the new Deputy Governor (DG).

John Ternus to Become Apple CEO in 2026, Succeeding Tim Cook

John Ternus is set to become the next Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Apple, succeeding Tim Cook, with the transition effective from 1 September 2026.

Ternus currently serves as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering at Apple and is a longtime company insider, having joined Apple in 2001. He has played a key role in the development of major products such as the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch, and has been instrumental in Apple’s hardware innovation and Apple Silicon transition.

The leadership transition is part of a planned succession strategy, unanimously approved by Apple’s Board. Tim Cook, who has led Apple since 2011, will move into the role of Executive Chairman, continuing to guide the company at a strategic level.

Ternus is expected to lead Apple during a crucial phase marked by growing competition in artificial intelligence (AI), evolving global markets, and the need for continued innovation in hardware and services.

Harivansh Re-elected as Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman for Third Consecutive Term

Harivansh was elected unopposed as Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for the third consecutive term on 18 April 2026. The motion was moved by JP Nadda, reflecting consensus across political parties.

New DGs Appointed for BSF, ITBP & NIA

On 14 January 2026, the Government of India appointed new Director Generals (DGs) for three key security agencies — the Border Security Force (BSF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

  • Praveen Kumar (1993-batch IPS, West Bengal cadre) was moved from ITBP to BSF, bringing strong expertise in border management and internal security.
  • Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor, former DGP Haryana, was appointed as DG, ITBP, enhancing leadership for India’s Himalayan border security.

Praveen Vashista Appointed as Vigilance Commissioner in Central Vigilance Commission

Praveen Vashista, a 1991-batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre, has been appointed as Vigilance Commissioner in the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC). He took oath of office on 16 January 2026, completing the three-member structure of the Commission.

  • The Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003 mandates one Central Vigilance Commissioner and two Vigilance Commissioners.
  • Vigilance Commissioners serve a four-year term or until the age of 65, whichever comes first.
  • Vashista’s appointment was cleared by the Prime Minister-led selection committee in December 2025.
  • The appointment was formally made by President Droupadi Murmu through a warrant issued on 12 December 2025.

Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor Assumes Charge as Vice Chief of the Air Staff, Indian Air Force

Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor SYSM PVSM AVSM VM assumed charge as the Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS) of the Indian Air Force on 1 January 2026, succeeding Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari, who superannuated after four decades of distinguished service.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Air Marshal Kapoor was commissioned into the fighter stream of the Flying Branch in December 1986. A highly experienced fighter pilot, Qualified Flying Instructor, and Fighter Combat Leader, he has flown all variants of the MiG-21 and MiG-29 aircraft and has logged over 3,400 flying hours on combat and trainer aircraft.

With more than 39 years of illustrious service, he has held a wide range of command, operational, instructional, and staff appointments. His key roles include Commanding Officer of a fighter squadron, Station Commander of a major flying base, Air Officer Commanding of a premier air base, Chief Instructor (Flying) at the Air Force Academy, and Directing Staff at the Defence Services Staff College. He also played a crucial role in the induction and operationalisation of the PC-7 Mk II trainer aircraft.

Air Marshal Kapoor has served as Defence Attaché to Pakistan and held senior strategic positions at Air Headquarters. Prior to his present appointment, he was the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Training Command and South Western Air Command. In recognition of his exceptional service, he has been awarded multiple gallantry and distinguished service medals, including Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal.


Raj Kumar Goyal Appointed as Chief Information Commissioner of India

Raj Kumar Goyal, a retired 1990-batch IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre, was sworn in as India’s new Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) on 15 December 2025 at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by President Droupadi Murmu in the presence of senior dignitaries.

Before his appointment, Goyal served as Secretary, Department of Justice under the Ministry of Law and Justice and earlier as Secretary (Border Management) in the Ministry of Home Affairs. With over three decades of experience in public administration, he brings extensive expertise in governance, justice, and internal security.

His name was recommended by a high-level selection committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi as members.

Goyal’s appointment is significant as it restores the Central Information Commission to full operational strength after nine years. His leadership is expected to strengthen the implementation of the Right to Information Act, 2005, enhancing transparency and accountability in Indian governance.

India Assumes Chairship of International IDEA for the First Time

India has been invited for the first time to chair the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA). On 3 December 2025, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar formally assumed the Chairship in Stockholm, Sweden.

CEC Gyanesh Kumar noted that India’s reputation for conducting free, fair, and transparent elections is globally recognised, making this a proud moment for citizens and election officials.

Justice Surya Kant Sworn In as 53rd Chief Justice of India

On 24 November 2025, Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath. He succeeds Justice B. R. Gavai, who retired on 23 November 2025.

Justice Surya Kant will serve a tenure of about 15 months, until 9 February 2027, when he turns 65.

Sanjay Garg Appointed as New Director General of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)

Sanjay Garg, a 1994-batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, has taken charge as the Director General (DG) of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) effective 1 November 2025. Before this appointment, he served as Secretary of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Additional Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education.

As DG of BIS, he will also hold the position of President of India’s National Committee in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Justice Surya Kant Appointed as 53rd Chief Justice of India

Justice Surya Kant has been appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI), succeeding Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, who retires on November 23, 2025. President Droupadi Murmu has approved the appointment under Article 124(2) of the Constitution. Justice Kant will assume office on November 24, 2025, and will serve a 14-month tenure until February 9, 2027.

Born on February 10, 1962, in Petwar village, Hisar district (Haryana), Justice Surya Kant earned his LL.B. from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984 and began practicing law in Hisar before moving to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1985.

He became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana in 2000 and was later elevated as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court (2004), Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court (2018), and Judge of the Supreme Court (2019).

Shirish Chandra Murmu Appointed as RBI Deputy Governor

The government has appointed Shirish Chandra Murmu as the new Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a three-year tenure starting on or after 9 October 2025.

He replaces M Rajeshwar Rao, whose extended term ends on 8 October 2025. Murmu, currently an Executive Director at RBI overseeing the Department of Supervision, will join the team of four deputy governors alongside T Rabi Sankar, Swaminathan J, and Poonam Gupta.

As per the RBI Act, 1934, the RBI must have four deputy governors: two from within RBI, one from commercial banking, and one economist for monetary policy.

TCA Kalyani Assumes Charge as 29th Controller General of Accounts (CGA)

On 1 September 2025, TCA Kalyani, a 1991-batch officer of the Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS), assumed charge as the 29th Controller General of Accounts (CGA) in the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance. She brings over three decades of experience across key ministries including Defence, Telecom, Fertilizers, Finance, Social Justice & Empowerment, Information & Broadcasting, and Home Affairs.

Kalyani, a gold medallist from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University, with advanced degrees from JNU, has contributed significantly to reforms such as Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for fertilizers, digital payment reforms at MTNL, and revival of the Fertilizer Corporation of India.

Appointment of Two New Supreme Court Judges

On 27 August 2025, the President of India appointed:

  • Justice Alok Aradhe, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court
  • Justice Vipul Manubhai Pancholi, Chief Justice of the Patna High Court
    as Judges of the Supreme Court of India.

The appointments followed the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai.

Anish Dayal Singh Appointed Deputy National Security Advisor

Anish Dayal Singh, 1988-batch IPS (Manipur cadre) and former DG of CRPF & ITBP, has been appointed as Deputy NSA under Ajit Doval.

  • He brings nearly 30 years of IB experience, including as Special Director.
  • Will handle internal security affairs – J&K, Left-Wing Extremism, Northeast insurgency, cybersecurity, and counter-terrorism inputs.
  • Joins NSA team with Rajinder Khanna (Addl NSA), T.V. Ravichandran (Dy NSA), and Pawan Kapoor (Dy NSA).

Sanjog Gupta Appointed as International Cricket Council (ICC) CEO

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has named Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer on July 7, 2025, becoming the 7th CEO in ICC’s history.

Parag Jain Appointed New RAW Chief

On July 1, 2025, Parag Jain, a 1989-batch IPS officer from Punjab cadre, took charge as the new Secretary of RAW (Research and Analysis Wing), India’s external intelligence agency. His appointment reflects a strategic leadership shift in India’s intelligence setup amid growing regional and global security concerns.

Jain is known for blending HUMINT (human intelligence) and TECHINT (technical intelligence) in critical operations such as the Balakot airstrike, abrogation of Article 370, and the high-precision Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK.

With past roles in J&K and Punjab, and international experience in Canada and Sri Lanka (countering the Khalistan network), Jain brings operational depth to his new role. His two-year fixed term begins as India faces threats like cross-border terrorism, hybrid warfare, and China-Pakistan coordination.

Germany’s Annalena Baerbock Elected President of the UN General Assembly

On 2 June 2025, Annalena Baerbock, former Foreign Minister of Germany, was elected President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), receiving 167 out of 193 votes in a secret ballot initiated by Russia. She will succeed Philemon Yang of Cameroon and assume her one-year term in September 2025, coinciding with major global events including the UN’s 80th anniversary.

Baerbock becomes the first woman from Western Europe and the fifth woman overall to hold the post. Germany had initially nominated diplomat Helga Schmid, but switched to Baerbock after a political reshuffle.

Despite Russia’s opposition, Baerbock pledged to work with all nations under her theme “Better Together“, emphasizing unity in tackling global challenges like conflict and climate change. UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed her election and called for global cooperation to address shared problems.

Justice B.R. Gavai Sworn In as 52nd Chief Justice of India

Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on May 15, 2025, succeeding Justice Sanjiv Khanna. The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He is only the second Dalit CJI after Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, and his term will run until November 23, 2025.

Born in 1960, Justice Gavai began his legal career in 1985 and became a Bombay High Court judge in 2003, later being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019. Over six years, he has served on around 700 benches and authored nearly 300 judgments, contributing significantly to constitutional, civil, criminal, and environmental law.

Justice Gavai hails from a legacy of public service—his father, Ramakrishna Suryabhan Gavai, was a prominent Ambedkarite leader, MP, and former Governor. His appointment is being recognized as a milestone for social inclusion and representation in India’s judiciary.

Ajay Kumar appointed as UPSC Chairman

Dr. Ajay Kumar, a former Defence Secretary and 1985-batch IAS officer from Kerala cadre, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). With a rich background in governance, defence reforms, and digital policy initiatives, Dr. Kumar brings a legacy of impactful leadership.

During his tenure as Defence Secretary (2019–2022), he was key to implementing major reforms like the Chief of Defence Staff, Agniveer scheme, and Ordnance Factory corporatisation. He also played a vital role in Digital India initiatives, contributing to UPI, Aadhaar, MyGov, and GeM.

An IIT Kanpur alumnus with a PhD in Business Administration and an MS in Applied Economics from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Kumar is expected to enhance transparency and efficiency in UPSC’s recruitment process. His appointment signals a reform-oriented and forward-thinking phase for the Commission.

Arvind Shrivastava Appointed as Revenue Secretary

Arvind Shrivastava, a 1994-batch IAS officer of the Karnataka cadre, has been appointed as the Secretary of the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance, effective May 1, 2025. His appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on April 18, 2025.

Shrivastava brings extensive experience in economic affairs and public administration. He previously served in the Prime Minister’s Office as Joint Secretary and later Additional Secretary, and held key roles in the Ministry of Finance, including Joint Secretary in the Budget Division.

His international experience includes working as a Development Officer at the Asian Development Bank. In Karnataka, he served as Secretary in the Finance and Urban Development Departments, and as Managing Director of the Urban Infrastructure Development & Finance Corporation.

Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma Takes Over as New Commander-in-Chief of Northern Army Command

On 30 April 2025, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma took over as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Udhampur-based Northern Army Command, succeeding Lieutenant General MV Suchendra Kumar after his 15-month tenure. Lieutenant General Suchendra Kumar retires today after more than 30 years of distinguished service.

Lieutenant General Sharma, an infantry officer with a career spanning three decades, has been involved in key operations such as Pawan, Meghdoot, Rakshak, and Parakram. He has held significant positions, including Director General of Military Operations, Military Secretary Branch, and Director General of Information Warfare at the Army Headquarters in New Delhi.
