42nd Edition of Naval Exercise Varuna Strengthens Indo-French Ties

The French Navy’s nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, Charles De Gaulle, arrived in Goa on January 4, 2025, to participate in the 42nd annual bilateral naval exercise Varuna with the Indian Navy.

The French Carrier Strike Group, including Rafale Marine fighter aircraft, received a ceremonial welcome at Goa’s Mormugao port.

The exercise aims to enhance interoperability, foster mutual understanding, and strengthen Indo-French naval ties.

France and India regularly collaborate to ensure maritime safety in the Indian Ocean.

Since 2008, France has been a member of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), a forum initiated by India to address issues like illegal trafficking, fishing violations, sea rescue, and pollution.

Indo-French Strategic Partnership

In the Men’s Youth 10-meter Air Pistol event, Chirag Sharma from Uttar Pradesh won the Gold medal, Dev Pratap, also from Uttar Pradesh, won Silver, and Mayank Choudhary of Rajasthan secured the Bronze medal.

Govt releases draft of Digital Personal Data Protection Rules 2025

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) released the draft Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules, 2025, on January 3, 2025, to implement the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. These rules aim to strengthen the legal framework for protecting digital personal data and provide a detailed implementation framework.

Key Provisions

  1. Notice Requirement: Data fiduciaries must provide clear notices to individuals about the data they collect, the purpose of collection, and obtain specific and informed consent.
  2. Consent Managers: The rules introduce the concept of consent managers who will work with data fiduciaries to collect and manage user consent.
  3. Data Protection for Minors: Verifiable parental consent is required for processing the personal data of children.
  4. Data Breach Notification: Data fiduciaries must inform the Data Protection Board of India (DPBI) within 72 hours of a data breach.
  5. Data Deletion: Users who stop using e-commerce, social media, or online gaming services for an extended period must be given 48 hours’ notice before their data is deleted.
  6. Data Localisation: Significant data fiduciaries must ensure that certain personal data is processed within India.
  7. Data Protection Impact Assessment: Significant data fiduciaries must conduct regular assessments and audits to ensure compliance with the DPDP Act.

Public Consultation

The draft rules are open for public feedback until February 18, 2025. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit their comments and suggestions to help refine the final version of the rules.

Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia Begin Their UNSC Term

New Non-Permanent Members of UNSC: Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia began their two-year term as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on 1 January 2025.

Replacements: They replaced Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland.

Ceremony: A flag installation ceremony was held at the UN headquarters in New York, where the new members’ permanent representatives delivered speeches and installed their national flags outside the Security Council Chamber.

UNSC Composition: The UNSC has 15 members – 5 permanent members (United States, United Kingdom, Russia, China, France – collectively known as the P5, with veto power) and 10 non-permanent members serving two-year terms.

UPI transactions surge to record 16.73 bn in Dec 2024

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has said that Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has:

  1. Record Transactions: Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processed nearly 16.73 billion financial transactions in December 2024.
  2. Transaction Value: The total value of these transactions was approximately 23.25 lakh crore rupees.
  3. Year-on-Year Growth: There was a 39 percent Year-on-Year growth in the transaction count.
  4. Growth in Transaction Value: The transaction value saw a 28 percent Year-on-Year growth.
  5. Daily Transactions: The average daily transaction amount reached 74,990 crore rupees in December last year.

India-Myanmar Border Fencing: 9 Km Completed, Work in Progress

Border Fencing with Myanmar:

  • Over 9 km of fencing has been completed at Moreh in Manipur as of January 2025.
  • The Border Road Organisation (BRO) is working on constructing 21 km of fence and road, a project awarded in February 2024.

India-Myanmar Border Details:

  • Total border length: 1,643 km.
  • States along the border: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram.
  • Border demarcation completed for 1,472 km out of 1,643 km.

Hybrid Surveillance Projects:

  • Two pilot projects of Hybrid surveillance systems are under construction in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.

IMD Declares 2024 as Warmest Year in India Since 1901

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that 2024 was the warmest year on record in India since 1901.

IMD Director General, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, stated that minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to be higher than normal across most parts of the country in January, except in some areas of the eastern, northwest, and west-central regions.

However, western and northern parts of Central India may experience more cold wave days than usual. Rainfall in north India from January to March is projected to be below normal.

In the World Blitz Chess Championship 2024, Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi shared the title after their final match ended in a tie in New York on 31 December 2024.

World Blitz Chess Championship 2024 – Open Section:

  • Carlsen led 2-0 and needed just a draw in the third game to secure the title.
  • Nepomniachtchi leveled the score 2-2, forcing tiebreaks.

Women’s Section: Ju Wenjun from China defeated Lei Tingjie in the final to win the World Blitz Championship, completing a double after drawing five games.

India’s Performance: R. Vaishali, India’s lone hope in the knockouts, overcame an initial loss in the quarterfinals against China’s Zhu Jiner, winning 2.5-1.5 after four games. In the semifinals, Vaishali lost to Ju Wenjun in a one-sided match, 0.5-2.5.

West Bengal lifts Santosh Trophy by defeating Kerala

West Bengal clinched the prestigious Santosh Trophy national football championship title by defeating Kerala 1-0 in the final held on December 31, 2024, at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium in Hyderabad.

This victory marks West Bengal’s record-extending 33rd title in the tournament’s history.

The match-winner came in the added time of the second half when Robi Hansda scored from close range after Aditya Thapa‘s header into the box.

Romania and Bulgaria fully join Schengen border-free zone

Full Membership: Romania and Bulgaria officially became full members of the Schengen zone on January 1, 2025.

Austria’s Objections: Austria had previously blocked their full entry over migration concerns but dropped its objections after a border protection agreement was reached.

Improved Travel: The removal of land border checks will ease travel and strengthen economic ties between Romania, Bulgaria, and other Schengen countries.

NPCI Lifts UPI User Limit for WhatsApp Pay

WhatsApp Pay UPI User Limit Removed: On 31 December 2024, The NPCI has lifted the unified payments interface (UPI) user onboarding cap for WhatsApp Pay, allowing it to extend services to its entire Indian user base of over 500 million.

Previous Restrictions: WhatsApp Pay was previously limited to onboarding 100 million users, with expansion permitted in phases.

Compliance: WhatsApp Pay must adhere to existing UPI guidelines applicable to third-party app providers (TPAPs).

UPI Transaction Cap Deferred: The rule capping any single app’s UPI transaction share at 30% has been deferred until December 31, 2026.

UPI Growth: UPI processes over 13 billion monthly transactions, with Google Pay and PhonePe controlling over 85% of the market. Between January and November 2024, UPI recorded 15,547 crore transactions worth ₹223 lakh crore.

UPI’s Impact: Since its 2016 launch, UPI has transformed financial access in India, benefiting 300 million individuals and 50 million merchants.

NPCI Vision: NPCI continues to drive innovations in retail payment systems, aiming for a secure, accessible, and cost-effective digital economy aligned with India’s vision of becoming a fully digital society.

India’s first glass bridge over sea in Kanyakumari

India’s first glass bridge over the sea was inaugurated in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, on 30 December 2024 by Chief Minister MK Stalin.

The 77-meter-long bridge, built at a cost of ₹37 crores, connects the 133 ft tall Saint Tiruvalluvar statue (renamed as the “Statue of Wisdom”) with the Vivekananda Rock Memorial.

Part of the silver jubilee celebrations of the Tiruvalluvar statue, the bridge offers tourists a breezy walk with a clear view of the sea below.

The rivers originating from the Himalayas are divided into 3 systems:

Indus River System

  • It starts from Mansarovar Lake, Tibet.
  • The river is 2900 km long.
  • Rivers joining the Indus River:
    • Jaskar, Nubra, Shyok and Hunza join the river in Ladakh.
    • Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum join the Indus River near Mithankot in Pakistan.
  • It passes through Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal, Punjab and Pakistan.
  • It joins the Arabian Sea at Karachi.

Ganga River System

  • Ganga River is 2500 km long.
  • Rivers joining the river:
    • Bhagirathi is the main stream. Alaknanda River joins it.
    • Yamuna, Ghaghra, Gandak and Kosi River join it.
  • It joins the Bay of Bengal.

Brahmaputra River System

  • It starts from Mansarovar Lake, Tibet.
  • The river is 2900 km long.
  • It meets the Bay of Bengal.
  • Ganga and Brahmaputra together form the biggest delta, its name is Sundarban Delta.

  • गंगा नदी २५०० km लंबी हैं।

    • भागीरथी मुख्य धारा है। इसके साथ अलकनंदा नदी मिलती है।
    • यमुना, घाघरा, गंडक और कोसी नदी मिलती है।
  • बंगाल की खाड़ी मे मिल जाती है।

ब्रह्मपुत्र नदी तंत्र

  • Karnataka was formed on 1 November 1956 under the States Reorganization Act. Earlier it was called Mysore State.
  • It was renamed Karnataka in 1973. It is bordered by the Arabian Sea in the west, Goa in the northwest, Maharashtra in the north, Andhra Pradesh in the east, Tamil Nadu in the southeast and Kerala in the south.
  • The state is the eighth largest with 29 districts. Kannada is the official and most spoken language of the state.
  • There are 30 districts in the state of Karnataka—Bagalkote, Bangalore Rural, Bangalore Urban, Belgaum, Bellary, Bidar, Bijapur, Chamarajanagar, Chikballapur, Chikmagalur, Chitradurga, Dakshina Kannada, Davangere, Dharwad, Gadag, Gulbarga, Hassan, Haveri, Kodagu, Kolar, Koppal, Mandya, Mysore, Raichur, Ramanagara, Shimoga, Tumkur, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Yadgir.
  • About 56% of the population of Karnataka is engaged in agriculture and allied activities.

History :

  • Karnataka was ruled by Nanda, Maurya and Satavahana kings. After that, the Kadambas and Gangas of Banavasi had the authority.
  • The huge statue of Gomateshwara (Shravanbelgola) was made by Chamundaraya. Pulakeshin II ruled from Narmada to Kaveri. The Chalukyas built various temples.
  • Kannada literature flourished during this period. The Chalukya kings of Kalyani and their later Hoysala chieftains of Halebid built beautiful temples and encouraged literature and fine arts.
  • The Bahmani Sultans and the Adilshahs of Bijapur built grand buildings in the Indo-Saracenic style. With the arrival of the Portuguese, cultivation of tobacco, maize, chili, groundnut, potato, etc. started in the state.
  • After the defeat of Tipu Sullan (1799) and Peshwa (1818), Karnataka came under British rule.
  • After independence, the state of Mysore was formed in the year 1953 and various areas with a majority of Kannada speakers were integrated. In the year 1973, its name was changed to Karnataka.

1st July – Doctor’s Day (India)
All across India National Doctors’ Day is celebrated on 1st July in memory of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, physician and the 2nd Chief Minister of West Bengal. He was born on 1st July 1882 and died on the same date in 1962.

1st July – Chartered Accountants Day
Chartered Accountants Day or CA Day is celebrated every year on 1st July in India. It is also known as ICAI Foundation Day. The day is celebrated to commemorate the establishment of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) on 1st July 1949.

1st July – GST Day
GST Day is celebrated to commemorate the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). GST Day was first celebrated on 1st July 2018 to mark the one year anniversary of the implementation of the new tax regime. GST was launched on the intervening night of 30th June and 1st July, 2017, at a function held in the Central Hall of Parliament.

2nd July – World UFO Day
World UFO Day is observed every year on 2 July to spread awareness about Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs). The main purpose of celebrating the day is to acknowledge the existence of UFOs. 2nd July was declared as the official World UFO Day by the World UFO Day organization. It is believed that the first World UFO Day was celebrated in 2001 by UFO researcher Haktun Akdogan.

2nd July – World Sports Journalists Day
World Sports Journalists Day is observed globally on 2 July every year. World Sports Journalists Day was established by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) in 1994 to mark the 70th anniversary of the organization’s founding. AIPS was formed on 2 July 1924 during the Summer Olympics in Paris.

International Plastic Bag Free Day is held around the world on 3 July to spread awareness that a plastic bag free world is possible and that there are sound environmental alternatives to single-use plastic bags. 4 July -USA Independence Day

World Zoonoses Day is observed annually on 6 July to commemorate the first vaccination against zoonotic disease such as influenza, Ebola and West Nile virus. World Zoonoses Day was established on 6 July 1885 to educate and raise awareness about zoonotic diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans. It is celebrated in the memory of French biologist Louis Pasteur, who administered the first dose of the first vaccine against rabies.

10 July- Nikola Tesla Day

12 July – Paper Bag Day
World Paper Bag Day is observed every year on 12 July to raise awareness about the importance of using paper bags instead of plastic bags. Francis Wooley, an American inventor, built the first paper bag machine in 1852. Later in 1871, Margaret E. Knight introduced another machine for making flat-bottom paper bags and gained fame as “The Mother of the Grocery Bag”. Improved paper bag design and manufacturing processes were developed over time by inventors Charles Stilwell and Walter Duebner in the years 1883 and 1912, respectively.

12 July- Malala Day
Every year on 12th July, the world celebrates Malala Yousafzai’s birthday. At the age of 17, Malala was the youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. The day also honors the rights of children and women. He called for worldwide access to education at the United Nations. Since that day, the United Nations has designated 12th July as Malala Day.

20 July – World Chess Day
International Chess Day is celebrated annually on 20 July, the day the International Chess Federation was established in 1924. The idea of ​​celebrating this day as International Chess Day was proposed by UNESCO, and it has been celebrated as such since 1966. It was established by FIDE.

20 July – International Moon Day
International Moon Day is being celebrated for the first time on 20 July 2022. 23 July – National Broadcasting Day
On this day in 1927, the first radio broadcast in the country was broadcast from the Bombay station under a private company, the Indian Broadcasting Company. Since 1927, radio has been an important part of people’s lives in India. All India Radio is truly serving to inform, educate and entertain the masses in line with its motto – ‘Bahujan Hitaya, Bahujan Sukhaya’.

24 July – Income Tax Day
On 24th July, 1860, Sir James Wilson introduced income tax for the first time in India. Wilson did this in 1857 to compensate for the damage done to the British rule during the First War of Independence. The first Income Tax Day was celebrated on 24th July 2010.

25 July – World Embryologist Day
On 25th July, 1978, Louise Joy Brown became the first baby girl to be born via in vitro fertilization (IVF). Since then, IVF has become a ray of hope for couples with infertility issues who dream of having a child. Therefore, Brown’s birthday, 25th July, is celebrated every year as World Embryologist’s Day.

26 July – Kargil Vijay Diwas
Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year in the memory of the brave sons of the country who sacrificed their lives while liberating the high peaks of Kargil from the occupation of Pakistan. Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on 26 July to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War. During the war, the Indian Army repelled Pakistani infiltrators and succeeded in capturing Tiger Hill and other posts as part of “Operation Vijay”.

28 July – World Nature Conservation Day
World Nature Conservation Day is observed every year on 28th July. The origin of World Nature Conservation Day is still not known.

28 July – World Hepatitis Day
World Hepatitis Day is observed annually on 28 July to provide an opportunity to advance national and international efforts on hepatitis. Also, this day makes people aware about hepatitis disease and its consequences in the lives of people suffering from it. The World Hepatitis Alliance was established in 2007. In 2008, the first community-based World Hepatitis Day was observed.

29 July – International Tiger Day
International Tiger Day is observed every year on 29 July to promote the protection of the natural habitat of tigers, to spread awareness about the need for tiger conservation. This day is also known as Global Tiger Day. International Tiger Day was established in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia to raise awareness of the decline in wild tiger numbers, leaving them on the brink of extinction, and to encourage tiger conservation work.

  • बिहार का प्रमुख पर्व सात है जो प्राचीन वैदिक काल से मनाया जा रहा है आज यह पर्व बिहार की संस्कृति का प्रतीक बन गया है।
