- Members of the United Nations adopted the first treaty to protect marine life in the high seas on 20th June 2023.
- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appreciated this historic agreement. Representatives of 193 member states approved the treaty without objection.
- The sea outside national boundaries is called the open sea, where negotiations for a treaty to protect biodiversity have been ongoing for more than twenty years, but efforts to reach an agreement have repeatedly stalled.
- The open ocean covers about half of the Earth’s surface. The new treaty will be presented for signature on 20th September 2023 during the annual meeting of world leaders at the UN General Assembly and will come into effect after 60 countries have ratified it.
