On 3 October 2024, the Indian government approved the National Mission on Edible Oils and Oilseeds (NMEO-Oilseeds) for 2024-25 to 2030-31, with a budget of ₹10,103 crore. The mission aims to make India self-reliant in oilseed production over the next seven years.
The mission targets increasing oilseed production from 39 million metric tonnes in 2022-23 to 69.7 million tonnes by 2030-31 and domestic edible oil production to 25.45 million tonnes, meeting 72% of India’s projected needs. It will also employ advanced technologies like genome editing and benefit farmers, reduce import dependence, save foreign exchange, and enhance environmental sustainability.
