Uttar Pradesh is the fourth-largest Indian state by area occupying 243,286 km2 (93,933 sq mi), equal to 7.3 per cent of the total area of India. On 9 November 2000, a new state, Uttaranchal (now Uttarakhand), has been created from Uttar Pradesh’s western Himalayan hill region. The forest cover is 6.1 per cent of the state’s geographical area. The area that is cultivable is 82 per cent of the total geographical area. In terms of Net State Domestic product (NSDP), Uttar Pradesh the fourth-largest economy in India, contributing around 8.4% of India’s gross domestic product.
