Nepal PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ loses vote of confidence in Parliament

Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal lost a parliamentary vote of confidence on July 12, 2024. This ended the Dahal’s 20-month tenure as Prime Minister of Nepal.

The liberal Communist Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) party, his largest ally, withdrew support, prompting the need for the vote.

Dahal needed at least 138 votes in the 275-member house to retain power. Out of 258 lawmakers present, 63 voted for Dahal, 194 voted against him, and one abstained.

Parliament Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire declared the rejection of Dahal’s confidence vote, paving the way for a new coalition government.
