Vinesh Phogat disqualified from Paris Olympics for being overweight; announces retirement

On 7 August 2024, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat faced a setback at the Paris Olympics when she was disqualified from the 50kg freestyle wrestling category final for being overweight by 100 grams.

The Indian Olympics Association stated that despite the team’s efforts, she was a few grams over the weight limit during the morning weigh-in. Prior to this, Phogat had an impressive run, defeating World No.1 and Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan to reach the quarterfinals. She then overcame Ukraine’s Oksana Livach with a score of 7-5 in the quarterfinals and beat Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semifinals, becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the Olympic final.
