Renowned Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has become the first Indian to win the prestigious Fred Darrington Sand Master Award for his exceptional contribution to sand art. The honor was presented at the Sandworld 2025 International Sand Art Festival held in Dorset, England.
To celebrate the occasion, Pattnaik crafted a 10-foot sculpture of Lord Ganesha bearing the message of “World Peace.” The award carries special meaning this year as it coincides with the 100th birth anniversary of legendary British sculptor Fred Darrington.
A Padma Shri awardee from Odisha, Pattnaik has represented India in over 65 international sand art festivals, known for artworks that blend spiritual themes with social messages. The Sandworld exhibition at Lodmoor Park, famous for large-scale sculptures made from just sand and water, featured global talent—but Pattnaik’s peace-themed creation stood out as a highlight.
His win is not only a personal milestone but also a proud moment for Indian art on the world stage.
