  • Established in 1888, the Durand Cup is the oldest football tournament in Asia and the fifth oldest in the world.
  • Originally started as an Army Cup for British Indian Army troops, it later opened up to civilian teams, becoming a prestigious event in Indian football.
  • Named after Sir Mortimer Durand, the then Foreign Secretary of British India.

  • First-Ever Olympic Esports Games to be Held in 2027 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

    The first Olympic Esports Games will be held in 2027 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This event is part of a 12-year deal signed with Saudi Arabia in 2023.

    The IOC has been exploring Esports for years, aiming to attract a younger audience as interest in traditional sports declines. After launching the Olympic Virtual Series in 2021 as a test, the IOC formalized its commitment by partnering with Saudi Arabia for the Olympic Esports Games.

    IOC President Thomas Bach confirmed that there is now a clear roadmap for the Games, with preparations beginning in 2025. A six-member committee will decide which Esports titles will be included in the competition.

    Saudi Arabia has made major investments in global sports, including football, Formula One, boxing, and golf. However, critics accuse the country of “sportswashing” to distract from human rights concerns, a claim that Saudi Arabia denies.

  • IMD Declares 2024 as Warmest Year in India Since 1901

    The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that 2024 was the warmest year on record in India since 1901.

    IMD Director General, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, stated that minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to be higher than normal across most parts of the country in January, except in some areas of the eastern, northwest, and west-central regions.

    However, western and northern parts of Central India may experience more cold wave days than usual. Rainfall in north India from January to March is projected to be below normal.

  • India’s Industrial Growth Slows to 2.9% in February 2025: Mixed Sector Performance Noted

    India’s Index of Industrial Production (IIP) rose 2.9% year-on-year in February 2025, showing moderate growth compared to 5.0% in January, as per the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

    Sector-wise:

    • Manufacturing (highest weight in IIP) grew 2.9%
    • Electricity generation rose 3.6%
    • Mining increased by 1.6%

    Overall IIP stood at 151.3 in February, up from 147.1 last year.

    Within manufacturing, 14 of 23 industry groups posted gains, led by:

    • Basic metals: 5.8%
    • Motor vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers: 8.9%
    • Other non-metallic mineral products: 8%

    Key drivers: auto components, alloy steel, cement, and prefabricated concrete blocks.

    Use-based trends:

    • Capital goods: +8.2%
    • Infrastructure/construction goods: +6.6%
    • Primary goods: +2.8%
    • Consumer durables: +3.8%
    • Consumer non-durables: -2.1%

    The report included revised figures for January 2025 (first revision) and November 2024 (final), with 94% and 95% response rates respectively.

    March 2025 IIP data will be released on April 28.

  • India to Host FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 in Goa

    India will host the FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 at Resort Rio, Arpora (Goa) from October 31 to November 17, marking the tournament’s return to India after 23 years. The event will feature elite players from 82 countries, including Viswanathan Anand, Gukesh D, and Faustino Oro.

    Inaugurated by Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, the tournament’s logo and anthem celebrate Goan culture and India’s chess heritage. Conducted in a knockout format, the World Cup aims to boost tourism, sports infrastructure, and reinforce India’s growing prominence in global chess.
