Parliament Passes Online Gaming Bill 2025: Real-Money Games Banned

On 21 August 2025, Parliament passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, creating a national framework for India’s gaming sector.

Objectives: Promote skill-based gaming & esports, regulate the industry, ban real-money betting/wagering games, and protect users from addiction & financial harm.

  • Prohibitions: Ban on money games, their advertisements, and related financial transactions.
  • Penalties: Up to 5 years jail, fines up to ₹2 crore for repeat offences.
  • Impact: Real-money platforms like Dream11, MPL, PokerBaazi face bans; esports & social gaming expected to grow.

    India-born Ghazala Hashmi has made history by becoming Virginia’s newly elected Lieutenant Governor, the first Muslim and South Asian American to hold a statewide office in the state. Born in Hyderabad, India, she moved to the U.S. at age four and won the 2025 election held on November 4, defeating Republican John Reid with 54.2% votes.

    A Democrat, Hashmi began her political career in 2019 when she flipped a Republican-held Senate seat and later chaired the Senate Education and Health Committee. Her campaign focused on education reform, reproductive rights, and gun control.

    As Lieutenant Governor, she will preside over the Virginia State Senate (Democrats 21–19 majority) and influence key legislative priorities. Her victory represents a powerful symbol of diversity and immigrant representation in U.S. politics, strengthening ties between Indian-American and mainstream American communities.

  • Iran–Israel Conflict Intensifies on Day 4

    The conflict between Iran and Israel has entered its fourth day on June 16, 2025, marked by heavy military exchanges and rising civilian casualties.

    • The crisis began with Israeli preemptive strikes on Friday, escalating into missile and airstrike barrages from both sides.
    • Iran reports 224 deaths, mostly civilians, while Israel has recorded over 20 deaths and more than 300 injuries.
    • On Sunday night, Iran launched missile and drone attacks on Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Petah Tikva, killing at least eight Israelis.
    • Israel retaliated with massive airstrikes on Iranian military, nuclear, and energy sites, claiming “complete operational freedom” over Iranian airspace.
    • The IDF reports destroying 120 Iranian missile launchers, about one-third of Iran’s stockpile, and intercepted weapon shipments near Tehran.
    • On Sunday evening, Israeli jets destroyed 20+ surface-to-surface missiles and struck 100 military targets in Isfahan.
    • Leaders on both sides have taken defiant positions:
    • Israel’s Defense Minister threatened that Tehran’s population will “pay the price”.
    • Iran’s President condemned Israel’s “genocidal aggression” and called for national unity.
    • The G7 Summit in Canada is prioritizing the conflict, warning of the risk of regional war.
    • Diplomacy has stalled, with Iran refusing to negotiate under attack and Russia offering to mediate, but neither side agreeing.

    Nuclear tensions are rising:

    The IAEA confirmed no damage to Iran’s Fordow and Khondab nuclear sites. However, Iranian lawmakers are drafting legislation that could lead to withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), escalating global concerns.

  • Poonam Gupta appointed as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)

    Dr. Poonam Gupta has been appointed as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a three-year term starting April 1, 2025, succeeding Michael Debaprata Patra. She previously served as Director General of NCAER and has extensive experience with the World Bank and IMF.

    Holding a PhD in International Economics, she specializes in economic growth, financial stability, and policy analysis. As Deputy Governor, she will oversee monetary policy, financial supervision, and economic forecasting. Her leadership is expected to strengthen RBI’s regulatory framework and support India’s economic growth amid key financial challenges.

  • 13th India–Kyrgyzstan Joint Military Exercise KHANJAR Begins in Assam

    The 13th edition of the joint military Exercise KHANJAR between India and Kyrgyzstan commenced on 4 February 2025 at Misamari in Sonitpur district, Assam. The 14-day exercise aims to enhance interoperability between the Special Forces of both countries, with a focus on urban warfare and counter-terrorism operations under a UN mandate.

    India is represented by its elite Parachute Regiment, while Kyrgyzstan is participating with its Scorpion Brigade. The exercise includes training in sniping, room intervention, building clearance, mountain craft, and specialised counter-terrorism drills.

    Exercise KHANJAR is held annually since 2011, with venues alternating between the two nations, reflecting growing defence cooperation. The 12th edition, held in March 2025 in Kyrgyzstan, featured high-altitude operations, advanced combat drills and cultural exchanges. Overall, Exercise KHANJAR highlights the strengthening India–Kyrgyzstan defence partnership and contributes to regional security and closer military ties.
