World Tuberculosis Day : 24th March

Observed on 24th March every year, World Tuberculosis Day aims to raise awareness about the severe health, social, and economic impact of Tuberculosis (TB) and to mobilize efforts to eliminate this global epidemic. The date commemorates the historic discovery of the TB bacteria by Dr. Robert Koch in 1882, paving the way for understanding and treating the disease.

This year’s theme, “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, and Deliver”, inspires deeper commitment to ending TB worldwide. It emphasizes combating drug-resistant TB and strengthening efforts at local, national, and international levels to save lives.

In India, the central government has launched several initiatives to eradicate TB:

  • Ni-Kshay Poshan Yojana: Providing ₹1,000 per month as nutritional support to TB patients.
  • Free drugs and diagnostics: Ensuring accessible treatment for all.
  • 100-day TB Elimination Campaign: Prioritizing districts to find and treat missing cases, reduce deaths, and prevent new infections.

According to the WHO’s Global TB Report 2024, India has made significant progress with a 17.7% decline in TB incidence rates from 237 per lakh population in 2015 to 195 per lakh population in 2023.

  • U.S.-Russia Peace Talks on Ukraine to Begin in Saudi Arabia

    U.S. and Russian officials will meet in Saudi Arabia to initiate talks aimed at ending the nearly three-year-long war in Ukraine. However, Ukraine has not been invited and will not engage with Russia without consulting its strategic partners.

    The talks, facilitated by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other officials, aim to set up a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Trump, who took office on January 20, has pledged to quickly end the war but has excluded European allies from the peace process.

    Russia has insisted Ukraine cede territory and remain neutral, while Ukraine demands Russia withdraw from occupied regions and seeks NATO membership or similar security guarantees. Meanwhile, the U.S. and Ukraine are negotiating a deal granting U.S. companies significant stakes in Ukraine’s critical minerals, though Zelenskiy has raised concerns over security provisions in the draft agreement.

  • India set to launch first human-operated underwater submersible under Deep Ocean Mission

    India is set to launch its first human-operated underwater submersible in 2025 as part of the Deep Ocean Mission.

    Depth Capabilities: Initially designed for a depth of up to 500 meters, with plans to extend to 6,000 meters by next year.

    Mission Objectives: Explore underwater resources, enhance knowledge of deep-sea ecosystems, and advance India’s blue economy.

    Resource Identification: Aim to identify critical minerals, rare metals, and undiscovered marine biodiversity with economic and environmental implications.

    Sustainability: Contribute to sustainable fisheries and biodiversity conservation.

  • Book “Chalice of Ambrosia: Ram Janmabhoomi – Challenge and Response” released by Vice President

    On 20 January 2026, Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan released the book “Chalice of Ambrosia: Ram Janmabhoomi – Challenge and Response” in New Delhi. Authored by Surendra Kumar Pachauri, a former Secretary to the Government of India, the book examines the historical, cultural and legal dimensions of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and presents the construction of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir as a defining civilisational moment for India.

    The book highlights themes such as the civilisational significance of Lord Ram, the convergence of faith, history, law and democracy, and the role of the 2019 Supreme Court verdict in fulfilling the aspirations of millions. The Vice President, while addressing the event, underscored that Lord Ram is the soul of the nation and noted the unparalleled importance of a temple at His birthplace.

    The release of the book serves as a scholarly documentation of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, offering insights into legal battles, cultural debates and democratic processes. It stands as a symbolic milestone in recording one of India’s most significant cultural and historical developments.

  • Unified Pension Scheme for Government Staff to Begin from 1st April 2025

    The Centre has officially notified the implementation of the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) under the National Pension System (NPS) for Central Government employees. The scheme, introduced in August 2024, will be effective from 1st April 2025.

    The UPS will apply to Central Government employees covered under the NPS who choose this option. Both existing and future employees can either opt for UPS under the NPS or continue with the NPS without the UPS option.

    The notification clarified that employees who choose the UPS option will not be entitled to claim any other policy concessions, policy changes, financial benefits, or parity with future retirees, including post-retirement benefits.

    On April 22, 2025, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) officially announced the final results of the Civil Services Examination 2024. This prestigious exam, known for its rigorous selection process, determines candidates for key administrative positions in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other central services.

    Highlights of the Results:
