India’s GDP Growth Surges to 8.2% in Q2 FY 2025–26

India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 8.2% in the second quarter of the financial year 2025-26, showing strong economic momentum. This growth is higher compared to 7.8% in the first quarter and 5.6% in the same period last year. The rise was mainly driven by robust performance in the manufacturing, secondary, and tertiary sectors.

The country’s nominal GDP increased by 8.7% during the quarter. Notably, the manufacturing sector, which contributes 14% to the total GDP, experienced significant improvement, growing by 9.1% compared to just 2.2% last year.

  • T20 World Cup 2026 Begins 7 February in India & Sri Lanka

    The ICC has released the schedule for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which will start on 7 February 2026. India and Sri Lanka will co-host the tournament for the second time.
    A major highlight is the India vs Pakistan match, scheduled for 15 February at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. All of Pakistan’s matches will be played in Sri Lanka.

    Former T20 World Cup–winning captain Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the brand ambassador for the tournament.

    A total of 20 teams will compete, divided into four groups of five each.
    India is placed in Group A along with Pakistan, Netherlands, Namibia and the USA.

  • International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) officially comes into force

    The Framework Agreement on the establishment of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) has officially come into force, as announced by the Environment Ministry. The IBCA and its Secretariat have become a treaty-based, inter-governmental international organization and legal entity as of January 23.

    Five countries – Nicaragua, Eswatini, India, Somalia, and Liberia – have deposited their instruments of ratification under the Framework Agreement. A total of 27 countries, including India, have consented to join the IBCA. Several international and national organizations working in wildlife conservation have partnered with the IBCA.

    The IBCA was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 9, 2023, during the ‘Commemorating 50 years of Project Tiger’ event. The Union Cabinet approved the establishment of the IBCA last year, with its headquarters in India.

    The IBCA aims to conserve seven big cats: Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar, and Puma.

  • India and US Launch Fourth Edition of Exercise Tiger Triumph 2025 for HADR Cooperation

    Exercise Tiger Triumph 2025, the fourth edition of the India-US bilateral Tri-Service Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Exercise, began in Visakhapatnam on April 1, 2025. The Harbour Phase will run from April 1 to April 7, including an Opening Ceremony with a joint Flag Parade on INS Jalashwa. The exercise will conclude on April 13 with a Closing Ceremony on the US Navy Ship Comstock.

    Following the Harbour Phase, participants will proceed to the Sea Phase off Kakinada for Maritime, Amphibious, and HADR operations. The exercise aims to enhance interoperability and establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for a Combined Coordination Center (CCC) to facilitate cooperation between the Indian and US Joint Task Forces (JTF) during emergencies.

    India will be represented by INS Jalashwa, Gharial, Mumbai, and Shakti, along with P8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Army troops from 91 Inf Brigade and 12 Mech Infantry Battalion, Air Force C-130 Aircraft, MI-17 Helicopters, and the Rapid Action Medical Team (RAMT). The US will participate with US Navy Ships Comstock and Ralph Johnson and troops from the US Marine Division.

  • Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar Dies in Plane Crash

    Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar died in a tragic plane crash on 28 January 2026 after a Learjet 45 (VT-SSK) crash-landed at Baramati airport. The Civil Aviation Ministry confirmed that all five people on board, including Ajit Pawar, lost their lives.

    Following the incident, the Maharashtra government declared three days of state mourning, and his last rites will be held in Baramati, Pune district, with full state honours at Vidya Pratishthan ground. Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde paid their last respects and met his family.

    A six-time Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar had a political career spanning nearly four decades, served as Finance Minister, presented the state budget 11 times, and played a key role in the cooperative and sports sectors, earning him a strong mass connect and the title of “Dada” in Maharashtra politics.

    The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, has secured a decisive victory in the country’s 2026 general elections, marking a historic political shift after nearly two decades out of power.

    • Majority Secured: BNP won 200+ seats in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad (parliament), giving it a clear majority to form the government independently.
    • Leadership: Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, returned to Bangladesh in December 2025 after 17 years of self-exile in London. He is expected to be sworn in as Prime Minister.
