World Press Freedom Day is observed on May 3, 2025, to promote press freedom, evaluate its global status, and support media independence.

The 2025 theme is “Reporting In The Brave New World – The Impact Of Artificial Intelligence On Press Freedom And The Media.” It emphasizes the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism, transforming how news is gathered, produced, and shared—offering both opportunities and challenges to media freedom.

The day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993, following the 1991 Windhoek Declaration by African journalists, which advocated for media pluralism and independence.
