On 18 September 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal. This plan aims to hold Lok Sabha and Assembly elections together, followed by local body and panchayat elections within 100 days.
The proposal is based on recommendations by a committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw explained that it will be implemented in two phases: first, the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, then local body elections.
The proposal will be discussed widely, and an implementation group will be formed. The committee’s report highlights that simultaneous elections can improve policy stability and voter turnout. The proposal will now go to Parliament for approval.
